TOWNSHEND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

Khan Younis Hospital is situated in the Gaza Strip and was funded by the United Nations Works Relief Agency to provide local medical facilities to the resident population. Townshend Landscape Architects developed a landscape concept that provided tranquil shaded areas adjacent to the wards as well as a series of external treatment rooms. Additionally the orientation and layout of the buildings and landscape, including the use of shade and water was an integral part of the passive cooling of the hospital building. Due to a shortage of funds, the practice worked with local gardeners to establish a nursery onsite to supply the plants for the project and expand the local base of gardening skills.
