Bluewater is a regional shopping centre, built in a 250 acre chalk pit in North Kent which was opened in March 1999. Townshend Landscape Architects developed a landscape strategy which created a strong identity which also highlighted the different character zones. In addition, the environmental value was enhanced, and a system for aquifer recharge was developed whereby reedbeds were used to filter and clean all the surface water run off. In excess of 5,000 semi-mature trees and a million diverse species of plants were planted on the site, in under two years.
