TOWNSHEND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

ST ANDREWS, BOW

Situated on the former St Andrews Hospital site in Bromley-by-Bow, East London, this residential led scheme is a collaboration between Barratt Homes (East London, the London Development Agency and Circle Anglia Housing Association). The redevelopment proposals were granted outline planning permission as part of a hybrid application to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in April 2009. Phase One, (Block A) was granted full permission in April 2009 and work has commenced on site. Phase Two (Block B) has been submitted as part of a reserved matter submission in July 2009. The landscape proposals for the St Andrews development provide a key link in a series of open spaces stretching from Mile End Park in the west, to the River Lea in the east. The proposals consist of a green network of public and semi private open spaces which help to break down the scale of the site to provide more human scale spaces, together with tree planting this will help to create a neighbourhood feel. The major public spaces are St Andrews Gardens to the west of the A12 and Reeves Park which is in the northern part of the site. The three main residential buildings, Blocks A, B and C will be designed by different Architects, the internal courtyard gardens responds to the diversity within the architecture to provide three distinct semi private spaces which offer a valuable resource for the local residents.
