TOWNSHEND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
ONE COLEMAN STREET
Coleman Street Gardens is a small public space in the City of London. Working with Swanke Connell Hayden Architects who designed the adjacent building, the brief was to design a contemporary verdant space, a leafy grove of lush planting with areas for seating. The design plays on the geometry between the existing and new buildings adjacent to the site; harmonising straight horizontal and curved vertical lines, forming undulating mounds of planting and lawn terraces. Multi-stemmed Amelanchier trees form a delicate canopy over areas of seating. The planting understorey consists predominantly of long grasses punctuated with subtle hues of mauve and wine coloured flowers.
