TOWNSHEND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
BARRIER PARK EAST
Barrier Park East is situated on 4.5 hectares of Brownfield land immediately to the east of Thames Barrier Park in east London.
Townshend Landscape Architects were appointed to design the landscape of this predominantly residential development and contribute to the continuing urban regeneration occurring along North Woolwich Road. Consisting of approximately 1,000 homes, the proposals for Barrier Park
East offer commercial and retail space for local residents in a modern designed environment.
The landscape proposals consist of a series of public spaces and semi private courtyards. The 6m level change across the site has been addressed with a series of sloped paths and 'finger routes', linking Thames Barrier Park with the surrounding existing and proposed residential developments and the DLR.
The public realm has been designed as a unifying feature to tie together the changing levels and uses across the site. The major public open spaces are activity areas in the north east of the site and the 'finger routes' between the blocks. These areas include a ball games court and skate facilities, children's play spaces, pockets of cafe seating, and areas of lawn and seating for play and rest. Each residential block contains a semi private courtyard space designed for the residents to relax, play and meet in.
